  1. Tho this may seem on the surface to be just about a societal attack on natural hair I see this as more of a societal issue. This is about people learning and understanding that there is a time and place for everything a lesson which seems lost these days. Vanessa has lovely natural hair and if it were washed , moisturized and put in a ‘natural’ and ‘neat’ style that was appropriate for school I’d hope that the administration would be fine with that. However it seems these days its about ‘pushing the envelope’. Pouffing and teasing up afro hair to go to school is just innapropriate. Its school. Its not a party, its not a concert. Vanessa’s mother needs to teach her daughter that there are rules , regulations and an appropriate venue for pouffed and teased hair. School is not the place. For so many reasons , starting with the consideration for other children who MAY have to sit behind her in a class of 4 to 5 foot tall persons.

    • An argument could be: Her hair is the way it’s supposed to be. Why should she ‘tame’ it? Afro hair is ‘normal’ it’s ‘frizzy’. Why should she have to conform to European standards of ‘neat’ could be the question.

  2. My child is growing the exact same type of hair. Father from Africa ( Zimbabwe) and myself from Europe ( Czech Republic). Reading this post is just waking up the rebel in me and hoping for her to have her hair as big as possible to stand out from the crowd. Saying that, she is very likely to be homeschooling so we may have no one to challenge eventually anyway…

    • Yes I would feel the same as you. The truth is having ‘afro’ type hair of a length out on a daily basis can be hard work, and like any hair is not practical in all situations, but to object because you don’t like the texture is unacceptable. Either everyone has to have their hair tied away or nobody. Good for you!!! I had a look at your site and you do have some beautiful kids by the way 🙂
